Two METRONET construction contracts awarded

Two major METRONET project contracts have been awarded for the Bayswater Station upgrade and the removal of the Denny Avenue level crossing.

Evolve Bayswater Alliance (Coleman Rail) has been awarded the contract to design and build the new METRONET Bayswater Station project. Western Australian company Decmil will also be a contributor on the Bayswater project.

Meanwhile, Downer EDI has been awarded the contract to remove the Denny Avenue level crossing, unlocking hundreds of local jobs and economic activity.

As well as designing and building a new four-platform station and all associated track, signalling, civil, drainage and overhead line works, the Bayswater Alliance will build a rail turnback for the Forrestfield-Airport Link, a new bridge at King William Street/Coode Street and make provision to support a connection to the Morley-Ellenbrook Line.

Western Australian Transport Minister, Rita Saffioti, said, “When complete, the new METRONET Bayswater Station will transform Bayswater into a major transport hub servicing the Midland Line, Forrestfield-Airport Link and Morley-Ellenbrook Line, and a new station is integral to this.

“The METRONET Bayswater Station upgrade and Denny Avenue level crossing removal projects, combined with construction of other nearby major projects like the Tonkin Gap and Morley-Ellenbrook Line, will help support the WA economy through some tough times ahead.”

WA company Decmil credited its METRONET Bayswater Station involvement as a “significant boost to its order book” in an announcement to the ASX in April 2020.

The METRONET project aims to transform Bayswater into a major transport hub linking the Midland Line to the future Forrestfield-Airport Link and Morley-Ellenbrook Line. Early works on the project began in late 2019.

Maylands MLA, Lisa Baker, said, “The heritage precinct of Bayswater is ready to support the jobs and innovation the station redevelopment brings.

“This amazing project will see Bayswater become an integral transport hub for our State.”

With a total project budget of $253 million, the new Bayswater Station project is set to support more than 350 jobs and assist in WA’s COVID-19 economic recovery.

The Denny Avenue level crossing project – which will involve both rail and road components – will remove the Denny Avenue level crossing with a rail-over-road underpass at Davis Road.

The contract also includes a civic infrastructure component that will focus on revitalising the Kelmscott town centre, tree planting and other landscaping works.

Denny Avenue is the first of up to eight level crossings to be removed under METRONET.

Armadale MLA, Tony Buti, said, “This final step in the removal of the Denny Avenue level crossing is welcome news for motorists in the region.

“The revitalisation of the town centre is perfectly timed to bring a much needed boost to business confidence and employment opportunities.”

Early works on the project began last year with geotechnical testing, demolition of buildings and removal of a number of Railway Avenue trees.

METRONET projects will be a key part of the economic recovery plan for the post-pandemic response.

“In times like these it’s important we continue to progress the projects that will provide work for local businesses and keep workers in their jobs. This will ultimately support the State’s wider economy,” Ms Saffioti said.

“This year alone we have six METRONET projects underway, creating thousands of local jobs and creating opportunities for local businesses.”

Businesses can register their interest in tendering for METRONET works here.
