The Manchester Road and Maroondah Highway level crossings demolition is one step closer to completion following a construction blitz, with more work scheduled for September.
During the July works, more sections of the rail bridges and station buildings were installed, and part of the existing Mooroolbark Station was relocated.
The next major period of works will be a 45-day construction blitz which will see Lilydale Station close, and buses replace trains on the Lilydale line from Friday 10 September to last service Sunday 24 October.
Maroondah Highway and John Street, Lilydale, will close at the railway line from Friday 10 September to Saturday 9 October to enable lowering of the highway under the rail bridge, remove and reconstruct the William Street East/John Street roundabout and demolish the John Street rail bridge.
Manchester Road will be closed between Brice Avenue and Winyard Drive at times during September and October with the longest closure from Monday 4 October to Sunday 17 October.
There will also be an east-bound lane closed on Brice Avenue between Manchester Road and George Street from Friday 10 September to Monday 25 October to allow for crane movements as the last of the L beams are lifted into place
While these are significant disruptions to these communities, this method of work is seen as an alternative to rolling closures spread out over a longer period of time. It will also see the removal of the boom gates and the opening of the two new stations months ahead of schedule.
The boom gates will be gone and the brand-new Mooroolbark and Lilydale stations will be open for passengers on Monday 25 October, with the projects expected to be fully completed in 2022.
