Early designs for two upgraded stations in Melbourne’s west have been released as works continue on major rail infrastructure improvements linked to the Melbourne Airport Rail project.

New stations at Tottenham and Albion will form part of Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1, alongside more than six kilometres of track upgrades between West Footscray and Albion aimed at increasing network capacity and improving reliability.

The $4.1 billion project is jointly funded by the Federal and Victorian governments and is expected to support up to 1,000 train movements a day through the corridor once complete.

Tottenham Station will be rebuilt about 20 metres north of its current location on the realigned Sunbury Line, with access provided from both sides of the rail corridor via a widened underpass.

The upgraded station will include new platforms, lifts, stairs, lighting and shelter designed to improve accessibility and passenger safety.

Albion Station will also be rebuilt slightly east of its current location and will feature a new accessible concourse, upgraded shelters, seating, CCTV and improved lighting.

Works already underway on the broader project include the relocation of underground services between Albion and Sunshine to prepare for new rail infrastructure.

The upgrades are expected to untangle one of Victoria’s busiest rail junctions and support future projects including Melton Line electrification and a direct rail link to Melbourne Airport.

Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Gabrielle Williams, said the new stations would provide modern facilities for local communities for years to come.
