Design and engineering work has started for a dual carriageway on the Great Eastern Highway between Anzac Drive and Gatacre Drive in Western Australia.

Forming the gateway to the Goldfields, the road is the only section within the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder that is not a dual carriageway.

The $14 million project will create about 100 jobs with design and engineering work, on the upgrades, currently underway with Main Roads Western Australia.

Construction is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2018-19 with the upgrades to be completed by June 2019.

Works will include improved drainage to carry water to an open channel and away from the highway via pipes beneath the road surface.

The upgrade will improve both safety and accessibility for about 8,000 vehicles that use this section of Great Eastern Highway every day, 15 per cent of these are heavy vehicles, some as long as 53.5m.

The work will also include the construction of an improved drainage system.
