The Western Australian Government has awarded the contract for an upgrade to a 10km section of the Victoria Highway, west of Kununurra in the north of the state.

Asset management and maintenance service company DownerMouchel was awarded the $3.5 million contract which involves the widening of the existing seven meter seal to nine metres, culvert widening and the installation of audible edge lines.

Minister for Transport Dean Nalder said, “The widened road will improve safety and reduce maintenance costs as a result of less edge wear to the road.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for Road Safety Liza Harvey said the audible edge lining system was designed to reduce single vehicle run-off crashes by alerting the driver should their vehicle stray too close to the edge.

“Funding is being provided through the Road Trauma Trust Account Regional Run-Off Road Crashes Program,” Ms Harvey said.

“This forms part of an ongoing State Government initiative to upgrade the Victoria Highway – part of the National Highway linking Perth to Darwin.”

The works, which are being managed by Main Roads Kimberley Region, are expected to be completed by November 2016.
