The McGowan Government will pursue rail infrastructure money through the National Rail Program in hopes of dedicating funding to Perth’s METRONET projects.
“Now that the Federal Government has realised the importance of trains and public transport, it is time they get behind Western Australia’s plan for METRONET.
“METRONET is a transformational project that will revitalise parts of the city and create better connections to jobs, education and essential services,” Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said.
At the last election, the people of Western Australia gave a clear mandate for the construction of METRONET to service Perth’s growing suburbs and deliver thousands of new jobs.
The Federal Government recently agreed to reallocate some of the existing funding from the Perth Freight Link project for METRONET projects.
The McGowan Government will fight for funding from the National Rail Program to fund METRONET projects, including:
- The commencement of the Circle Line, linking Thornlie to Cockburn;
- Extension of the Joondalup Line to Yanchep;
- The new Morley-Ellenbrook Line;
- Extension of the Armadale Line to Byford; and
- The removal of dangerous level crossings.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti has also outlined improvements to the Australind train service and funding for automatic train control would be raised as National Rail Program priorities.
“It’s time WA got its fair share of infrastructure, we have the projects and they deserve funding – it’s time for the Federal Government to take Western Australia seriously,” Ms Saffioti said.
