SUEZ signs MOU with Western City and Aerotropolis Authority

Smart cities technologies and strategies will inform the planning of Western Sydney’s new Aerotropolis, set to become Australia’s third largest city.

The Western City and Aerotropolis Authority has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an international resource management company, SUEZ, to apply its smart city, energy and resource management solutions to Sydney’s Western Parkland City.

SUEZ will advise on innovations and technologies to optimise the sustainable management of resources at the Aerotropolis, from recycling and reuse through to energy creation and smart water networks.

According to the Greater Sydney Commission, the population of the Western Parkland City is projected to grow from 740,000 in 2016 to 1.1 million by 2036, and to well over 1.5 million by 2056.

The Commission’s vision of a ‘Metropolis of Three Cities’ imagines three, integrated and connected cities that will rebalance Greater Sydney, placing housing, jobs, infrastructure and services within easier reach of more residents, no matter where they live.

The Aerotropolis, which is adjacent to the new $5.3 billion Western Sydney Nancy Bird Walton International Airport, is a joint initiative by the NSW and Federal Governments, aimed at attracting national and international investment and delivering education opportunities, enhanced liveability and 200,000 jobs across the new city.

SUEZ Director of Marketing, Communications and Smart Cities, Justin Frank, said the company seeks to play an integral role in the master planning of what will become Australia’s third largest city.

“We have a unique chance here to establish the Western Parklands City internationally as a shining example of a more circular and integrated approach to resource management,” he said.

SUEZ has proven expertise in pioneering smart cities technologies in Europe, including a 12-year, €105 million project transforming the French city of Dijon.

The company also leads in the application of smart meter technologies, with more than four million active devices globally. In Australia, it supplies more than seven million residents with water daily and services over four million Australians with waste collection services each week.

Signing of the MoU took place on 1 July at the Australian Embassy in Paris, hosted by Australian Ambassador to France, His Excellency Brendan Berne.

Signatories included SUEZ’s global Chief Executive Officer, Bertrand Camus, Chair of the Western City & Aerotropolis Authority, Dr Jennifer Westacott AO, and Deputy Chair, Geoff Roberts AM.
