Preparatory works are underway at Tottenham ahead of major rail upgrades that will support Stage One of the Melbourne Airport Rail project between West Footscray and Albion.

Crews are carrying out site investigations ahead of the reconstruction of the Ashley Street rail bridge and construction of a new Tottenham Station, which will be relocated around 20 metres north of its current location to accommodate realigned Sunbury Line tracks.

The upgraded station will feature a new pedestrian underpass linking Rupert Street and Sunshine Road, providing lift and stair access to the platforms while improving access across the rail corridor.

The works form part of a broader project to untangle six kilometres of track between West Footscray and Albion and deliver two new platforms at Sunshine Station, transforming it into a major transport interchange capable of accommodating up to 1,000 trains a day, including future Melbourne Airport Rail services and electrified services to Melton.

The project will also permanently separate metropolitan, regional and freight rail services through Sunshine, improving network capacity and reliability.

Current works include bridge assessments, geotechnical investigations and utility location surveys ahead of major construction.

Melbourne Airport Rail Stage One is expected to be completed in 2030.
