The Victorian Government has unveiled the final life-size model of Melbourne’s new high capacity metro train.

Victorian Premier, Daniel Andrews, and Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, inspected the model train, which will be on public display at Birrarung Marr from 9 February 2018.

Over the course of 2017, Victorians provided 2500 pieces of feedback on the design of the 160m, seven-carriage train.

Feedback from accessibility and passenger groups, train drivers and technical experts led to 157 design improvements, including better hand holds, extra priority flip-down seating, and improved bike and pram zones.

Manufacturing of the 65 High Capacity Metro Trains will begin soon at Melbourne’s Newport workshops.

It would be great if the trains were actually manufactured in Australia, with our more than capable supply chain!
Not just have the bogies (Highest cost item and easiest to say local content compliant “lazy option” and only helping the minimal less than 100 people employed at Newport) rather than the 10,000 plus extended SMB supply chain, if the actual train bodies were manufactured locally!
Oh well, we will just have to continue building for the prisons which is the result and the by-product of not supporting local manufacturing jobs!
