The regulator for heavy vehicles will receive $3.5 million in federal funding to support 15 industry-led projects in Round 7 of its Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI).

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) initiative will support heavy vehicle projects created for industry, by industry, to make their workplace safer.

NHVR Chief Executive Officer, Sal Petroccitto, said collaboration between industry and government would support improved safety in the freight industry.

“Greater road safety outcomes can be achieved through collaboration with government, industry and the community,” Mr Petroccitto said.

“There are some exciting grassroots projects included in Round 7 that can create meaningful change across a local, regional and national level.

“We’re supporting those who have strong, implementable ideas to deliver safer drivers, safer vehicles and safer road use for all Australians.”

In the last six years, the Federal Government has invested in 132 HVSI projects, and has now committed a further $1.7 million to the NHVR to fund targeted projects improving heavy vehicle safety, for a total investment of $5.6 million for the 2022-23 period.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, said growth in the freight industry would demand better safety outcomes for workers and commuters.

“Australia’s freight task is expected to increase 80 per cent by 2030,” Ms King said.

“To make Australia’s roads safer for the growing transport and logistics sector, we have listened to what the industry said they need, and are supporting the safety projects that will make a real impact to their day-to-day operations.”
